JSW Energy Signs PPA for 1,600 MW Thermal Power Project in Saiboni, West Bengal
JSW Energy signs PPA with WBSEDCL for 1,600 MW super ultra-supercritical thermal power project in West Bengal
JSW Energy Limited has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) through its wholly owned subsidiary, JSW Thermal Energy Two Limited, with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) for a 1,600 MW greenfield thermal power project in West Bengal. The project will be developed at Saiboni and will consist of two units of 800 MW each, based on coal-based super ultra-supercritical technology.

The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening West Bengal’s baseload power availability while reinforcing JSW Energy’s position as one of India’s leading private-sector power producers.

 Project Details

Developer : JSW Thermal Energy Two Limited
Capacity : 1,600 MW (2 × 800 MW)
Location : Saiboni, West Bengal
Offtaker : West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL)
Technology : Coal-based super ultra-supercritical thermal power plant
Timeline : Expected commissioning within six years

The use of super ultra-supercritical technology is expected to improve plant efficiency and reduce emissions intensity compared to older thermal power technologies, aligning with evolving regulatory and environmental standards.

 Strengthening JSW Energy’s Thermal Portfolio

JSW Energy currently operates 5,658 MW of thermal power capacity, with an additional 3,200 MW under construction at Saiboni, West Bengal. The company also has 1,800 MW of thermal capacity at KSK Mahanadi, taking its total thermal portfolio to 10,658 MW.

With the addition of this newly signed 1,600 MW PPA, JSW Energy further consolidates its thermal generation base, ensuring long-term revenue visibility through regulated offtake agreements with state utilities.

Expanding Locked-in Capacity Across Power and Storage

JSW Energy has built a diversified generation portfolio with a total locked-in capacity of 32.1 GW, comprising:
  • 13.3 GW operational capacity
  • 14 GW under construction across thermal and renewable assets
  • 150 MW under acquisition (hydropower)
  • 4.6 GW in the development pipeline
In addition to generation, the company has made strategic investments in energy storage. JSW Energy has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity, including:
  • 26.4 GWh from pumped storage hydropower projects
  • 3.0 GWh from battery energy storage systems (BESS)
These assets are expected to play a critical role in grid balancing as renewable energy penetration continues to rise in India.

Long-Term Vision

JSW Energy has set ambitious long-term targets, aiming to achieve 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2030. The company has also committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, balancing its thermal expansion with significant investments in renewable energy and storage solutions.

Part of the USD 23 billion JSW Group, which has interests across steel, energy, infrastructure, cement, and sports, JSW Energy continues to position itself as a key player in India’s evolving power sector, combining reliable baseload generation with a growing clean energy and storage portfolio.
