Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has signed a long-term agreement worth over $3 billion to supply green ammonia to Samsung C&T Corporation, marking one of the largest green ammonia offtake agreements announced globally.
Under the agreement, Reliance Industries Limited will supply green ammonia to the South Korean company for a 15-year period, with deliveries expected to begin in the second half of fiscal year 2029.
The deal supports South Korea’s efforts to expand the use of low-carbon fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia in power generation and heavy industry as the country works toward its long-term decarbonization targets.
Green ammonia is produced using green hydrogen generated from renewable energy, making it a carbon-free fuel alternative for sectors that are difficult to electrify. It is also emerging as an efficient carrier for transporting hydrogen across long distances.
The green ammonia supplied under the agreement is expected to be produced at Reliance’s upcoming integrated new energy ecosystem in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The company is developing a large-scale clean energy manufacturing hub that will include solar module manufacturing, electrolyzer production, battery storage, and green hydrogen facilities.
Reliance has been expanding its clean energy ambitions since announcing plans to invest $10 billion in new energy initiatives in 2021. The company aims to become a major global producer of green hydrogen and related fuels, including green ammonia.
The agreement also highlights the growing international demand for green fuels as countries seek to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy systems.
For Samsung C&T, the partnership will help establish a reliable supply chain for green ammonia imports, which are expected to play an important role in South Korea’s energy transition strategy.
