Waaree Energies will invest ₹8,175 crore to set up a 16 GWh lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh.

In a major boost to India’s advanced energy storage manufacturing ambitions, Andhra Pradesh has secured an ₹8,175 crore investment proposal from Waaree Energies to establish a 16 GWh lithium-ion battery gigafactory in the state.
The proposal has received in-principle approval from the State Investment Promotion Board chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, signaling the state’s continued push to position itself as a hub for clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
16 GWh Integrated Battery Facility
The gigafactory will be set up at Rambilli in Anakapalli district and will cover the full battery value chain — from lithium-ion cell manufacturing to module assembly, pack integration, and large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The project is expected to generate around 3,000 direct jobs and support ancillary industries in the region. Industry observers note that the facility could significantly reduce India’s dependence on imported lithium-ion cells, particularly from East Asian markets.
Strategic Push Toward Backward Integration
The investment reflects a broader shift toward backward integration within India’s renewable energy ecosystem. As solar and wind capacity additions accelerate, large-scale domestic battery manufacturing is becoming critical for grid stability, renewable integration, and electric vehicle (EV) growth.
Energy storage is increasingly viewed as a backbone for India’s clean energy transition, especially as the country targets 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Market and Policy Implications
The announcement also drew attention in the markets, with Waaree Energies’ expansion plans reinforcing investor confidence in India’s growing clean-tech manufacturing ecosystem.
Under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership, Andhra Pradesh has aggressively pursued investments in renewable generation, green hydrogen, solar manufacturing, and now advanced battery storage. The latest gigafactory proposal strengthens the state’s ambition to build a vertically integrated clean energy value chain.
If implemented as planned, the 16 GWh facility could become one of India’s largest battery manufacturing units, playing a pivotal role in enhancing energy security, supporting grid modernization, and advancing the country’s decarbonization goals.
Waaree’s wholly owned subsidiary Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (WESSPL) raised approximately ₹1,003 crore (US$111 million) from a mix of family offices, high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), and institutional investors. This funding forms a key part of Waaree’s ambitious ₹10,000 crore (US$1.1 billion) capital expenditure plan to set up a 20 GWh lithium-ion cell and battery pack manufacturing facility in India.
