New Delhi base SAEL Industries Limited has commissioned a 1 GWp solar power project at Khavda in Gujarat, marking a significant addition to India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity.

The Khavda project has been developed through SAEL’s subsidiaries — SAEL Solar P4 Private Limited and SAEL Solar P5 Private Limited — each with an installed capacity of 500 MWp. The entire capacity has been tied up under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL), ensuring assured offtake for the electricity generated from the plant.
The Solar Plant Spread over nearly 3,600 acres, the solar plant is among the largest utility-scale solar installations commissioned by a private developer at a single location in the country. The project forms part of the larger Khavda renewable energy zone in Kutch district, which is emerging as one of India’s most important clean energy hubs due to its high solar irradiation and favourable terrain.
From a technology perspective, the project deploys over 1.5 million (15 Lakh) TOPCon bifacial solar modules, which are designed to deliver higher efficiency and improved power generation by capturing sunlight from both sides of the panel. According to the company, the use of advanced module technology is expected to enhance energy yields and improve long-term project performance.
SAEL Industries highlighted that the project strongly aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. More than 60% of the modules used in the Khavda project were assembled at SAEL’s solar manufacturing facilities in Punjab and Rajasthan, supporting domestic manufacturing and strengthening local supply chains. The company said this approach also helps reduce import dependence and creates employment opportunities across its manufacturing and project execution operations.
Commenting on the development, SAEL’s management said the commissioning of the Khavda project demonstrates the company’s execution capabilities in delivering large-scale renewable energy projects within planned timelines. The leadership added that SAEL remains focused on expanding its clean energy portfolio while integrating manufacturing, technology and project development.
The company has a portfolio of over 8.3 GW of solar independent power producer assets across India.
The commissioning comes at a time when India is pushing aggressively towards its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030. Large projects such as the Khavda solar plant are expected to play a critical role in meeting the country’s climate commitments, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing long-term energy security.
